How does orthognathic surgery work?
If Dr Hoey determines that orthognathic surgery is best, we will get you started with braces treatment. This treatment will usually last between 6-18 months.
As your teeth begin to move, you may think that your bite is getting worse rather than better. However, when your jaws are placed into proper alignment during surgery, the teeth will then fit into the correct positions.
When it is time for your surgery, you will be in the care of an oral surgeon at the hospital. The surgery can take several hours, depending on your specific case. Surgery is performed in the hospital with an oral surgeon, and can take several hours, depending on the amount and type of surgery needed.
We can adjust your lower jaw, upper jaw, or both. Certain movements may require the jaws to be separated, with bone added or removed to achieve the proper alignment and function. We may use other facial bones to help contribute to that alignment.
You should be able to return to school or work within two weeks of your surgery. After your mouth has about 4-8 weeks to heal, Dr Hoey will use your braces to fine-tune your smile. Usually, we will be able to remove your braces within 6 to 12 months after surgery. Then, all you will need to do is wear a retainer to keep your beautiful new smile.
